What’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month?

Sexual Assault Awareness Month is a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about sexual intercourse, educate communities and people about how best to avoid sexual intercourse, and supply resources for survivors. It is usually observed in May. This is the month of their first National Sexual Assault Symposium and also the first national sexual assault survey since the Sexual Assault Awareness Act was passed into law in 1990. In this age, organizations around the country have to provide one sexual assault awareness program to every community and school complex that they function.

Every year, organizations may choose to concentrate on sexual assault awareness month. This is great because it allows survivors who may not otherwise get out and speak about their experiences to be heard and supported by others. Additionally, there are support groups that allow survivors to share their stories openly with like-minded people.

The aims of Sexual Assault Awareness Month would be to empower the community, educate community members, and improve the awareness of violence against women and girls nationwide. Every year, tens of thousands of new survivors are attacked. However, due to the lack of resources for these offenses, it is frequently not possible for survivors to record charges or hold perpetrators accountable. In reaction to this, the Department of Justice is currently devoting resources to work on raising present data on reported sexual assaults and preventing future crimes from happening. This will mark the start of a new prevention month.

“Silence can benefit us if we use it wisely,” says Julie Potiker, a mindfulness expert and author of the new book, Life Falls Apart, But You Don’t Have To: Mindful Methods for Staying Calm in the Midst of Chaos. “If we allow the quiet to slow us down and open us up to what is there in our environment—a dog barking, a bird chirping—it means focusing attention on what you are hearing, which can stop your mind from ruminating and worrying.”
